Dear Readers,

This publication started in 2022 as an experiment by our founder when the platform was truly for newsletters. Substack felt like the rare corner of the internet built for real life writers: relationships with readers, thoughtful work, and a pace that rewarded quality over noise. It worked. It felt like a digital salon, not a constant feed.

Over time, the platform has changed. The center of gravity has shifted toward volume and, and away from the kind of intentional publishing we’re committed to. For us, that’s the clearest signal: it’s time to build somewhere that better supports depth, clarity, and a more direct relationship with our readers.

The Sixteenth’s priority is simple: deliver real value — work that’s considered, useful, and worth returning to. Our new site gives us more control over the experience, the archive, and how we show up week to week.

To thank our current Substack subscribers for being early supporters, we’re offering 40% off your subscription for the first six months when you move with us. Find the link to the discount at the bottom of this post.

What stays true and what gets better: Your membership, explained.

  • Free Subscription: Our weekly newsletter, The Brief, will continue to be free to all subscribers.

  • Basic Paid: includes full access to every article, plus The Postscript — our weekly margin note: a meditation on what lingered after the headlines, and the odd, beautiful debris that accumulates in a week well-lived.

  • We’re also introducing a new subscription tier, The Front Row, which includes a quarterly salon (live Q&As), a founders-only memo with behind-the-scenes notes and early access to magazine and merch drops.

We can’t wait to start this new chapter with you!!

With eternal gratitude,

The Sixteenth
